9 WAVE Plaques Come Home!

I attended the WAVE Awards Ceremony Saturday night at the Holiday Inn near Old Town Sacramento.  I was joined by several nominees from the Media Center.   Of the close to 20 nominees from the Media Center, 8 producers were honored.  But we brought home 9 plaques as Beth Charlesworth one in two categories.  Congrats to all!

I have to say a huge THANK YOU to Access Sacramento for putting on a bang-up conference.  The sessions were smart and informative, food was great, hotel service really excellent and the location was fun, and really inexpensive - $150.00 for the weekend.  WOW!   But most of all -- the producers, volunteers and staff of community media really are the best.

When your time to give a little comes around, please continue to support the Media Center by all means, but don't forget that our umbrella organizations do a lot for us on the regional and national level as regards government policies toward grassroots media.  Check our acmwest.org and alliancecm.org  to find out more about our organization.

ACM WESTERN REGION CHAIR

Plenary Session:  State and Federal Broadband Policy Issues

This workshop will provide background on the current regulatory environment at the state and Federal level and prepare us for the telecommunications/Broadband re-write process that is already beginning.
What’s happening with the CAP Act? Are key sections of that bill going to resurface in the re-write?  A new strategy and action plan needs to be developed to address PEG funding and “channel” capacity issues at the federal, state, and local levels.

Moderator:  Matt Schuster, Executive Director, TV Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA.

Speakers: Mitsi Herrera, Cable/Broadband Administrator Montgomery County, MD, Joe Van Eaton, Best Best & Krieger; Washington, DC., Jim Horwood, Spiegel & McDiarmid, Washington, DC

SATURDAY OCTOBER 20, 2012

Web Stream: www.AccessSacramento.org - "Click Channel 17 Icon"

Building Political Support
The loss of local franchising authority and tight local government budgets are resulting in serious harm to community media centers and public access channels. Support from elected officials, local government staff, and community and business leaders is essential to the preservation of opportunities for the public to have access to community media centers and PEG access channels. This session will bring together local government staff and community media leaders to discuss how to build political support before a crisis occurs.

Moderator: Sue Buske, President, The Buske Group, Sacramento,

Speakers: Fred Cohn, Assistant City Manager(retired), Chair of Access Monterey Peninsula Board of Directors Bob Davison, Executive Director, Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Television Commission

12:30 PM - 1:45 PM: KEYNOTE LUNCH & PANEL DISCUSSION (PST)
Web Stream: www.AccessSacramento.org - "Click Channel 17 Icon"

Broadband Content Delivery and the Future of New Media
A lively panel discussion examining different media perspectives, both commercial and non-commercial, surveying the current impact and future developments in broadband digital content delivery.  Hyper-local media content is evolving for all media and community media centers should be leading the way as “anchor institutions”.  What will be the impact of state legislation such as SB 1611?  Will is trash future broadband options in California?

We have invited an expert panel with four different perspectives on this critical topic.
Each panelist is responsible for helping their organization survive in a highly competitive media world.  What is happening? How are they surviving? What comes next?

Moderator: Mike Wassenaar, Executive Director, St. Paul Neighborhood Network

Speakers: Jason Shoultz, KVIE Public Television, Tom Negrete, Managing Editor, Sacramento Bee & Sacramento Connects, Jared Goyete, Editor in Chief, Sacramento Press (SacPress.com), Autumn Labbe-Renault, Executive Director, Davis Media Access

New Show Deals with Grief and Loss

The Open to Hope Show with Dr Gloria and Dr Heidi is for people who have suffered the loss of someone they love.  Dr Gloria Horsley and Dr Heidi Horsley, a mother-daughter team of therapists who specialize in grief and loss, tackle the tough topic of death and how one can go on to find hope after the death of a loved one.  The shows feature expert guests from all over the country who share their insights into how they figured out how to continue after their own significant losses.  Episodes also include segments with live music, cooking demonstrations, and crafts and skills that will help in the healing process.  Two episodes have already been produced:  a 60-minute show "Open to Hope, Handling the Loss of a Child" a 30-minute show, "Open to Hope, Handling the Loss of a Spouse", and In production are future episodes that focus on other types of loss, with plans to produce at least 12 shows a year.  The next episodes are “Handling the Holidays” & “Finding Hope for the New Year”.  The show is produced in Palo Alto, CA, in front of a live audience, but, because death and loss touches everyone, the potential audience includes the entire nation.
